The Illusion of Identity

The Illusion of Identity: Understanding the Mechanics of Mind and Body

Dr. Parth:

Right now, you are an image. Not a physical entity, but just a thought created by your brain. This thought, however, is not left bare. It is wrapped in layers of emotions—bundles of likes and dislikes. These bundles are not accidental; they exist to protect this fragile thought, ensuring it survives in a world of uncertainties. If the surroundings are familiar and comfortable, the thought can go into hibernation. If the environment is threatening, it must stay alert.

Over time, these bundles of emotions and tendencies solidify into something we call ahamkara, or identity. It is not just a simple thought anymore; it becomes a label, an entity of its own, driving the way you perceive and respond to the world. But this ahamkara is not floating alone; it has a protector—an intelligence that constantly evaluates what is good or bad, right or wrong, safe or dangerous. This function is governed by a significant part of your brain, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC).

The ACC does not rest. It keeps you in a perpetual state of duality—front or back, up or down, light or dark. This function, in yogic terms, is buddhi. But the buddhi is not independent; it serves only one purpose—to protect the ahamkara. If your identity is challenged, your intelligence will fight for it, not because it is truth, but because that is how the system is designed.

Now, here is the catch—someone who is highly intellectual is also deeply emotional. Why? Because the buddhi exists to serve the ahamkara, and ahamkara is a bundle of emotions. If you are too caught up in your intellect, you will be equally vulnerable to emotional upheavals. The very intelligence you pride yourself on is enslaved to your identity.

But what is this thought, really? A thought is not a thing; it is an action. Just like the heart beats and the lungs breathe, the brain thinks. Thought is simply an action of the brain, a process that arises from memory. But memory itself is not singular—it is a complex mechanism with eight major types of memory cells. Depending on which memory is activated, a different version of you arises. This is why a person is never just one thing; they are a collection of personas, shaped by different memories at different moments.

So, what we call mind is simply the action of the brain. And this action is not independent—it influences your entire body, producing chemicals, neurotransmitters, and hormones. This is what medical science investigates—blood markers, chemical imbalances—without understanding that they are just manifestations of the deeper mechanics of thought and memory.

The movement of your hand is an action. The same hand can write, dance, fight, or bless. The action remains the same, but the intent behind it changes based on memory. If you can take charge of this action, if you learn to consciously direct your thought, chemistry, and body, you can move from disease to ease. Millions of people have done this—not through external intervention, but by mastering the inner mechanics of their system.

Yet, there are fools who do not understand this. They play with the system without knowing its intricacies, and in their ignorance, they break it. You do not need external forces to ruin your life—if you do not understand the mechanics of your own mind, you will be your own destruction.

Understanding the interplay of mind, memory, and identity is the key to true well-being. If we can consciously take charge of our inner mechanics, we can transform the very foundation of our existence.

Question for Reflection:
If your identity is just a bundle of memories, and your thoughts are merely actions of the brain, then who are you beyond this?
