Fortune of Assam — The Truth We Forgot to Remember
Once upon a time, the wealth of this land was not counted in money.
It was counted in nature — in its soil, its rivers, its forests, its effortless abundance.
People did not depend on anyone for food or shelter.
Nature fed them, land protected them, community held them.
So life was simple — eat, work a little, celebrate, dance, be joyful.
Survival never became a struggle.
But slowly, competition arrived, ambitions shifted, and the axe fell on the very forests that sustained life.
Human beings became disconnected — not only from nature, but from their own wisdom.
The source of wealth moved from nature to land.
If someone had a hundred bighas, their children became landlords by birth.
Life flowed easily — not because of competence, but because land carried their burden.
Then came the desire to look “urban."
People went out, saw the cities, and decided that this rural simplicity was not enough.
They sold the land that fed their ancestors.
And once land was sold, nature was already gone — so both sources of natural wealth disappeared at once.
Naturally, government jobs became the only known survival.
To get that job, people imitated the British, learned English, memorized what the system demanded —
and in this imitation, they dropped the knowledge that their own soil had preserved for centuries.
Today, we stand in a strange place:
People neither have land to depend on, nor the wisdom to regenerate it.
They lost nature.
They lost skill.
They lost employment.
And now, even the capacity to create employment is missing.
When survival becomes the highest priority, life shrinks into four things —
food, sleep, sex, and security.
Everything higher — intelligence, creativity, entrepreneurship — becomes distant, almost impossible.
In such a state, if one individual rises, speaks of competence, dreams of possibility —
ninety-nine will pull him down.
Not because they are evil, but because fear and ignorance have become their foundation.
And then comes the most dangerous stage —
the land begins to be sold to outsiders.
Not to neighbors, but to corporations, private authorities, and entities who have no emotional connection to the people here.
When such development enters, remember this truth:
**When development first comes, locals become labour.
When development expands, migrants replace them.
The local culture declines, employment weakens, and identity dissolves.**
This is not prophecy — this is history repeating itself across many Indian states.
It happened in Tamil Nadu.
It happened in Odisha.
It happened in Himachal.
And it will happen in Assam unless something shifts at the level of consciousness.
Industries will rise, yes.
Roads will appear, buildings will grow taller.
But those industries will demand high competence — not emotional belonging.
So local people will be taken as low-grade labour, clerks, assistants.
And highly skilled workers will be brought from outside.
Assam will grow — but it will grow like someone else’s Assam, not the Assam that has been here for thousands of years.
Because when nature is gone, land is sold, wisdom is lost, and competence is absent —
what remains to protect culture?
If the people of a land cannot shape their future, someone else will shape it for them.
That is the truth.
