Walking the Terrain of the Unknown - The Discipline of the Unknown

When Life Becomes Uncertain, Seeking Begins

Parth:

Plans are useful only when you are walking on a terrain that is already known. If you are traveling on a highway that millions have used before, planning makes sense — you know where the turns are, where the fuel stations are, where you will stop for the night.

But the moment you step into an unknown terrain, plans lose their certainty.

Suppose you say, “I want to become a great doctor,” or “I want to be a highly successful model.” There is no fixed highway for these things. No one can show you a precise map and say, “Walk exactly like this and you will arrive.” When the destination is big, the terrain will always be uncertain.

For small things — tomorrow’s meeting, next week’s work — planning is fine. But when you hold a larger vision, slowly you realize that rigid plans become a limitation. A truly large goal demands that you remain open, alert, and willing to walk without a fixed script.

In that sense, when life becomes uncertain, you are naturally moving towards the path of a seeker.

A seeker is not someone who knows everything and plans everything. A seeker is someone who is willing to live without the comfort of certainty.

If you do not know what will come onto your plate today, where you will sleep tonight, or where the next step will take you, suddenly you will see your awareness becomes sharp. Life demands your full presence.

Unfortunately, modern urban living has created too much certainty. The same house, the same food, the same office, the same emotions, the same people — day after day. When everything becomes mechanically certain, the mind slowly becomes dull.

This is why, traditionally, people undertook parikrama or pilgrimages. At least once in six months or a year, they stepped away from the comfort of certainty. They walked without knowing what the next day would bring. This was not punishment — it was a way to make life intense again.

That is how a sanyasi lives. Not because he has nothing, but because he has chosen not to depend on certainty.

Only when you create a little distance from the compulsions of your body and mind can you become their master. Otherwise they will run your life like dictators.

If there is no distance, the same food, the same emotion, the same relationship, the same routine — everything begins to suffocate you. Slowly people start feeling a strange madness within themselves.

Much of the suffering in the world is simply this — people living the same patterns again and again without awareness.

When their investments, relationships, or ambitions become a roller-coaster ride, suddenly they look up to the heavens and pray, “God, please save me.”

But the real solution is not prayer in panic.

The real solution is to create a little distance from the mind and the body — so that you are no longer driven by them unconsciously.

Only then can your body become healthy, your mind balanced, and your energies vibrant.

Otherwise life will feel like a dangerous trip — not because life is dangerous, but because you are not conscious enough to navigate it.
