Depression is Not Sadness — It Is a Withdrawal from Life
Today, many people casually say,
“I feel depressed.”
But depression is not just feeling sad for a few hours or days.
Sadness is an emotion.
Depression is a reduction of life participation.
It is a state where a human being slowly begins to feel:
“Ab kya fayda?”
(What is the point anymore?)
From “Ab Kya Hoga?” to “Ab Kya Fayda?”
When the mind is restless about the future, it asks:
“Ab kya hoga?”
This is anxiety.
But when the system loses its inner fire,
the question changes to:
“Ab kya fayda?”
This is depression.
One is fear of the future.
The other is withdrawal from life itself.
Depression Is Not Pain — It Is Numbness
If you are in pain, at least you are responsive.
There is still life moving within you.
Depression is different.
It is not intense suffering.
It is absence of involvement.
A person may say:
“Kuch mehsoos hi nahi hota.”
“Kuch karne ka mann nahi karta.”
“Bas rehne do.”
This is not emotional weakness.
This is reduced inner fire.
Understanding Through the Five Elements
In the yogic sciences, human experience is governed by five elements.
Fire (Agni) Drops
Fire is what gives:
Enthusiasm
Drive
Will to act
Passion for life
When Agni becomes low,
the person does not feel like doing anything.
Not because they are lazy —
but because the inner combustion is weak.
Earth (Prithvi) Becomes Heavy
The body feels:
Slow
Dense
Stuck
Even simple actions feel like effort.
This is why depressed individuals often say:
“Uthne ka bhi mann nahi karta.”
Space (Akash) Feels Empty
The most painful part of depression is not sadness.
It is meaninglessness.
A silent question keeps echoing:
“Main kar bhi loon toh kya hoga?”
This is a collapse of inner direction.
What Is Actually Happening?
Anxiety is over-movement of mind.
Depression is withdrawal of life energy.
One is turbulence.
The other is shutdown.
Modern World — Comfortable but Exhausted
Never before in human history have people had:
So much comfort
So much entertainment
So many distractions
Yet never before have people felt so:
Empty
Unmotivated
Disconnected from life
Because stimulation is high,
but inner capacity is low.
You can stimulate the mind endlessly,
but stimulation is not the same as aliveness.
Depression Is a Signal — Not a Failure
Depression is not your enemy.
It is life indicating:
“Your system currently does not have enough energy and coherence to participate fully.”
If you only try to silence this with medication,
you may reduce the noise…
But the fire is still missing.
What Truly Needs to Happen
A human being must rebuild:
Physical activation
Emotional involvement
Mental clarity
Energetic balance
Sense of meaning
When these align,
life naturally regains its taste.
Not because someone motivated you…
But because your inner fire is lit again.
Summary
Anxiety asks: “Ab kya hoga?”
Depression says: “Ab kya fayda?”
Both are not diseases of circumstance.
They are signals
that the inner system needs alignment and elevation.
